widescreen vs the Sims

Well, I can run the Sims in widescreen, but not at my native resolution. Unfortunately, running in a non-widescreen resolution does NOT do the black bar thing; I think this particular monitor might not know how to respond to that instruction or something? I don't know.

However, there's a teeny problem with widescreen: video filming is done in 4:3 ratio. I could probably learn to deal with the photo taking being off if I had to, but the filming being captured in 4:3 does not work for me. (And, just in case you were ever curious: the Sims video capture is total crap... there is no way that I should have any problem with this machine running in high res, high quality, but it slows my game down just as it did with the old machine. So I get to decide now if I want to capture all my movies in slomo mode (it runs at the right speed outside the game, it's just the actual filming that sucks) or at medium size.)

So, I just played around with windowed mode and I think I probably could get used to it. The big thing I need to get used to really is moving the camera with the keyboard. There's a bonus to windowed mode, too, which is that if I choose to do it this way, I can use printscreen to capture images instead of relying on the Sims' lousy max size. I mean, chances are I'll resize everything down but at least this way I have a choice (and it'll work better for composite images). So I might just be playing windowed from now on... it'd also make it easy to have a notes file open, too.

(And as to why I like printscreen:

That's the thumbnail size. Click for full size.)

Also, despite my best efforts, my recolours are still a little patchy in the game. Not sure it matters that much, but I kinda wish I could've done them a bit better.

Last thing I discovered is that one of my character's hair has a serious mesh flaw. I'll be redoing her hair (I've already picked the new one, it just needs the recolour) and if I can figure out which hair # that is (shoulda taken pictures or something) I'll be removing the base one.

(You can see the hair I'm picking in its base colour, as well as two of my recolours, in that picture above.)

More later...

ETA: It's Rose #21 that's broken. Also, I just realized I'm using the hair in the picture for someone else, so I'll be picking a different one for her.

  1. Re: filming in widescreen... Chris and I filmed using one of the postprocessing cheats and then just cropped the black lines away to get proper widescreen resolution. If you fiddle with the video capture settings (the text file, I mean) you can get decent enough quality that it looks good on an 8-foot projection screen.

  2. Heh, I will probably be using Windows Movie Maker to edit things. Crop? What's that?

As for quality, that isn't the issue. The issue is that filming in high quality results in the game bogging down, despite the fact that I have a computer that shouldn't happen on. I can film at 320x240 without any noticeable slowdown. At 640x480, the slowdown is slightly noticeable at "medium" quality, and extreme at "high" quality.

I have a frigging quad core computer with an insanely good video card. This should not happen. I conclude therefore that their video capture software is crap, which doesn't surprise me, frankly. I tried fiddling with the settings but pretty much anything at 640x480 slows down. So I either have to put up with that (and learn to judge how long something's happening based on cues other than actual time) or I have to use 320x240 or something between that and 640x480.

*shrug* I'll figure it out. It's not like I'm planning on doign a LOT of video, so the slowdown might be acceptable. Right now I'm testing how a youtube upload of both basic settings (large/medium vs medium/high) looks.
